Identify the model before following keys
This guide covers the Texas Instruments BA II Plus. These setting and key labels follow its official TVM worksheet documentation. Other financial calculators may use a different workflow.
Set up the TI BA II Plus
Use 2nd → CLR TVM. Open 2nd → P/Y, enter 1 → ENTER, move down to C/Y, enter 1 → ENTER, then 2nd → QUIT. Open 2nd → BGN; if BGN appears, use 2nd → SET to select END, then quit.
Enter the example
Store 10 in N, 5 in I/Y, 1000 → +/− in PV, and 0 in PMT. Press CPT → FV. The displayed future value is approximately 1,628.89.
Understand the number independently
The mathematical relationship is 1,000 × 1.05^10. A negative initial deposit and positive future receipt describe opposite directions of the same investment cash-flow pattern. The positive final number includes the original principal; interest alone is $628.89 after rounding.
The online future value calculator uses a positive principal input because its ordinary savings interface is amount-oriented. It then shows a positive balance without asking you to manage financial-calculator signs. The different input sign does not change the underlying lump-sum growth relationship.
Check the time and rate units
For this example, ten periods mean ten years. The 5% assumption is nominal annual with annual compounding. Do not replace the ten periods with 120 while leaving an annual periodic interpretation unchanged. A monthly problem must coordinate rate, compounding frequency and payment count.
For monthly deposits under a 12% nominal annual rate compounded monthly, the equivalent payment-period rate is 1%. Twelve $100 end-month deposits with no principal accumulate to $1,268.25. Verify a monthly problem separately in the annuity tool before reusing assumptions from an annual example.
Troubleshoot by isolating one mismatch
Start with the simplest version: no recurring payments and a whole number of years. Compare the equation with the step-by-step guide. Once the lump-sum result agrees, add recurring payments and their timing. This prevents several simultaneous assumption changes from hiding the cause of a discrepancy.
A result rounded to cents is not the full internal numerical value. If you use it as a new input for a reverse calculation, a small rounding difference is expected. The companion present value guide uses an exact one-year example to make the reverse direction easy to inspect.
